Big News for Anyone Who Spends Time in the Central Texas Sun
A newly approved UV filter offers better defense against the rays linked to skin cancer—just in time for summer.
Summer in Central Texas isn't exactly forgiving. If you work outdoors, or have kids, a yard, a lake day, or a Saturday little league game on the calendar, sunscreen is part of the routine. So here's some news worth knowing: for the first time in over 20 years, there's a new Food and Drug Administration-approved sunscreen ingredient hitting the market.
The new active ingredient is called Bemotrizinol.

It's a synthetic, oil-soluble UV filter that absorbs both ultraviolet A and B rays. It's been used safely in European, Australian, and Asian sunscreens since 2000, and it's now finally coming to U.S. store shelves.
So why all the buzz?
The short version: the sunscreens you've been buying do a solid job blocking the rays that cause sunburn — but not great at blocking the deeper, sneakier rays linked to skin cancer and premature aging.
In fact, research from the Environmental Working Group shows the average American sunscreen only delivers about 24% of the UVA protection its SPF label implies.
Bemotrizinol doesn't break down in the sun the way older chemical filters do, and it doesn't absorb into the skin at the same levels as ingredients like avobenzone. It captures and neutralizes both UVA and UVB rays at the skin's surface before they can do damage.
It also helps stabilize other sunscreen ingredients while boosting overall SPF performance. It also goes on completely clear regardless of skin tone without leaving white streaks.
The new sunscreen will initially be sold this summer by DSM Nutritional Products under the brand name Parsol Shield. After an 18-month exclusivity period, the ingredient will be available for use by other manufacturers.
Until then, the fundamentals still matter: SPF 30 or higher, applied generously and reapplied every two hours. Don't let a high SPF number lull you into skipping reapplication.
