Understanding Stomach Pain in Central Texas
Learning the difference between mild digestive discomfort and warning signs of a serious condition can protect your health.
Stomach pain can be confusing. One minute you’re fine, and the next, you’re doubled over wondering if it’s just something you ate or something more serious. At Premier ER + Urgent Care, we’re here to help you figure it out.
Causes
Most of the time, stomach pain is caused by things like indigestion, gas, or even a stomach bug — and with stomach viruses making the rounds in Central Texas, it’s not unusual to feel a little off. These issues are usually mild, but they can sometimes lead to dehydration, especially for kids and older adults.
Other times, your "stomach" pain could actually be coming from any number of organs in your abdomen, and the intensity of the pain doesn’t always match the seriousness of the issue.
This area is home to your stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. To pinpoint the cause, doctors often divide the abdomen into four quadrants:
- Upper right: This area includes the liver, gallbladder and parts of the small intestine. Pain here could indicate issues like gallbladder or problems, or bowel obstructions.
- Upper left: This quadrant houses the stomach, spleen and parts of the pancreas. Pain in this area might be related to stomach ulcers or spleen issues.
- Lower right: This section contains the appendix and parts of the intestines. Sharp pain here is often associated with appendicitis.
- Lower left: This area includes parts of the large intestine. Pain here could be linked to conditions like diverticulosis or constipation.
Managing Pain and When to Seek Help
If your pain is manageable, try eating bland foods like crackers or bananas, sipping water or electrolyte drinks, and using a warm compress to ease the discomfort. Ginger can help with nausea, and over-the-counter antacids might do the trick for indigestion.
But if the pain doesn’t go away or starts getting worse, it’s time to come see us. Pay attention to warning signs like fever, vomiting, painful urination, or feeling lightheaded. And if you’re dealing with sudden, severe pain, vomiting blood, or trouble breathing, don’t wait, head to the ER right away.
